You are here : RenovationsWhy is plywood 1200mm in width

Why is it that plywood appears to be supplied in sheet widths no wider than 1200mm?

There are many reasons that plywood is generally not available in widths over 1200mm. The most relevant reason though is cost of labour.

Most handling systems to manufacture plywood larger than say 1220mm width are inadequate. Things like glue spreading, press loading and trimming would become manual operations and therefore not cost effective.

In Australia there was once a mill capable of producing a full train floor in a single pressing, however it closed down in 1991.

Mister Ply&Wood carry sheets of imported plywood up to 1530mm wide but only in a limited range of thicknesses. The range of applications are limited.
